Living The Pulse

Formed on March 3rd, 2008 by Albert Mai.

What started as a "for-fun" dance crew project in which a few friends just wanted to compete in the Momentum Dance Challenge, went on to being a well-known, fresh, keen-on dance troupe full of students wanting to make a change in the dance community. The crew represents talent, clean-cut choreography, and mind-blasting performances while maintaining humbleness and love for the art.

Nian Tsyr (NT) Ng
Hi guys! My name is Nian Tsyr Ng (En-Tee.Ng) and first of all, I’d like to thank you guys for checking out our tumblr page! I am currently 19 years old (1992 baby) and attends Carleton University for a B.A in Psychology, but it’ll change to a Bachelors of Commerce in International Business for Accounting and Financial Management. Ye, sounds geeky, but I’d like to complete a double major in some aspect related to Business :) I’d love to be able to dance my whole life if possible though! Hahaha, imagine that, a dancing business graduate :0
Upon completion of this year (2011) will officially mark my 3rd year dancing. Starting up Pulse N’ Limited with Albert Mai March 2008, I have many thanks to him of who I am now. Albert was in the midst of starting a troupe (PNL) and my friend suggested that I joined since I loved dance so much. Upon the formation of the troupe, I have not once touched choreography and was in a complete lost state of mind. Albert has taught me much in dance and later on introduced my to the Cultureshock/Futureshock dance troupe. He insisted me on joining Futureshock with him and under the direction of Cybil, I was able to grow a lot more in dance. During that year, I also had the opportunity to dance with dTale dance crew thus growing my fundamentals in dance even more. I always wonder if my friend hadn’t approached me I would have never met Albert and all the wonderful people i’ve been able to meet whom inspired me to grow and push more in dance. Shortly 1 one year after dancing with PnL which brings us to 2009 marked my first milestone of travelling between Toronto and Montreal. From there, my skills developed as I was able to learn from many well-known urban choreographers from the States, Toronto and Montreal area. I continued to polish my skills and now I am on the mission to find real hip-hop. I continue to travel not only to improve my techniques in dance, but as well to share my vision, passion and love for dance with others. I have many thanks to my growth in dance not only from individuals, but from my skills in martial arts and music as well. I now teach Beginner/Intermediate classes at Capital City Dance with Albert Mai and rep Pulse N Limited and B.O.T under the direction of Bryan East of Boogiebots.
I would say my main style is Hip-Hop, however I like to call it Urban dance. Not having the opportunity to be trained in a studio, I learn from others and travel where workshops are held to learn more.
For me, Dance is a lifestyle. It even deserves a capital “D” ! When you look at others, you can tell whether they are a dancer or not. Dance has completely evolved me into a new person - a whole new perspective on life. When I listen to music, I see pictures, colours and a story that I am able to put into my body and formulate what we call “Dance”.  Dance has become a passive part of my life where my body reacts to music without me wanting to, in sense it has become a part of my automatic nervous system (GEEK ALERT! :D) Although this may sound corny - because of dance, I am who I am today. It has opened up and generated so many different views I see in life. The values, lessons and goals I learnt from dance is applicable to my everyday life and I am thankful. Most importantly, it has given me a family with no borders that is always increasing as we all share the same passion for dance. The people that surrounds me today has really influenced my life in the smallest ways and when put together has a big impact. Dance is my breath, body and soul - it is my lifestyle. Be Hungry, Yet Humble.

John Yip
I’m 19 years old and a student from the University of Ottawa. I study the mysteries of language within the program of linguistics.
The beginning of my dance journey started when I was at the age of five. It was during my vacation to the Philippines; my eldest cousin wanted to co-ordinate a small dance troupe with the family so he made a small choreography to “Sha La La” by the Venga Boys. Ever since that night of the performance, I have been dancing ever since. Days after arriving back in Canada, I asked my mom if I could continue dancing. So we went to enrol myself at CDF for jazz.
It became a bumpy road when I turned 10 years old. I lost the interest for jazz when I was introduced to hip-hop. And back then, hip-hop wasn’t big and my parents didn’t approve because they thought it was just some gangster motif that would only cause trouble; however, that still didn’t stop me from dancing in my room. My uncle’s friends were dancers and I would often watch them busk in our backyard. Slowly catching onto the tricks of popping and hip-hop as they would dance to Notorious or Missy Elliott.
It was only recently that I realized that dance was something important to me. It’s not just a release, or a passion. It’s my second life that meaning has yet to be discovered.
When it’s all over, it’s not who you were. It’s whether you made a difference. - Bob Dole

Linh Le
My name’s Linh Le, I’m 20 and currently in my second year at Carleton University for Food Science & Nutrition. I started loving dance ever since elementary school but I didn’t get into it seriously until I was 17 when I auditioned for Pulse N Limited. Since then, hip hop has been my main suit but I love trying other styles like wacking, tutting, vogue and even ballet. This year, I’ve gotten the pleasure of becoming PnL’s director and I’m hopeful and confident that PnL will work hard and grow strong to make the brand new year a great one. Dance to me is a hobby and even a passion. It allows me to be creative and showcase the love I have for dance and music. My PnL family is wonderful; I love dancing, learning, and getting inspired by them. It’s amazing to see everyone’s individual talents, passions and enthusiasm and I hope to continue to grow into a dancer I can be proud of.

Amy Amox Ng. 20 years old.  Carleton UniversityThis is going to be my 3rd year of dancing. My brother took me to my first hiphop class 3 years ago and it just picked up from there.  A couple weeks after that first class I decided to go to an audition just for the fun of it but ended up auditioning last minute. And that’s how I came to join Pulse n Limited.  Dancing is much more than an activity to me.  The amazing people you meet, the music, the adrenaline running through my veins on stage; I just love it all.  The feeling I get when I dance, I just can’t find it in anything else I do.

Albert Mai
Hello hello, my name is Albert (MaistroHD) Mai. I’m 20 years old, born the ‘91! Chyea! I go to University of Ottawa for honours in Biochemistry, and in all honesty, I want to become a dancing doctor in the future.
I’ve been dancing for 11 years (this June), and I started off with The Studio School of Dance. I then moved onto bboying at Canadian Dance Factory, and after that, just decided to stick with Hip Hop at Future Shock Dance Troupe. I was with Future Shock Dance Troupe since I was 14, all the way until I was 18 (then moving up to Culture Shock Dance Troupe for a year) leaving the Culture Shock family at 19. At 17, I started working as a dance instructor at Elite Dance Studio.  At 16, I also founded Pulse N’ Limited dance troupe, which is what you guys are reading about! I was director from 16-20, in which I stopped directing due to school and other activities such as working as a dance instructor. I currently still dance and choreograph for Pulse N’ Limited (being a director adviser to our lovely director, Linh “Beniga” Le), and I currently teach the beginner’s drop-in’s, int/advance drop-in’s, and kids Hip Hop classes at Capital City Dance. Come check out my classes sometime! Or check them out on YouTube at “MaistroHD”.
My main style is “hip hop”. I quotation that because my genres fall more into that category. I do, however, like calling it urban dance, rather than hip hop, but I mainly fall under a swaggy house. I started at 10 years old with contemporary, moving onto bboying and ballet, before just sticking to Hip Hop period.
Dance is a lifestyle. It represents who you are as an individual. Not once during the day do I not think about dance, and not once during the week do I ever stop dancing. Dance is the way my body is made, the way I feel art. It’s a lifestyle full of artistic movements in which your body conveys to inspire others. That’s what dance is to me. Dance is my life — and although that sounds tacky, it truly is that. If it weren’t for dance, I would’ve lead my life to a darker side. Dance taught me discipline, it gave me a reason to live, and it also inspired me to uphold my talent to inspire others into living their life to the fullest, rather than what “could have been”. Without dance, I don’t think I would be alive. I truly don’t. Hardships in life were dropped by adding a beat to my body’s rhythm. I went through daily tasks easily knowing that I’d be able to hit up a studio afterwards with my friends and family for rehearsal to let out extreme emotions. That’s dance to me. Dance is a lifestyle that saved me from a horrid lifestyle that could’ve occurred — or a lifestyle where life may not even have existed.

Cindy Kong
My name is Cindy Kong, I’m 21 years old and I go to Algonquin College. I started dancing in Mid-March 2009. I never really had a good reason why I started dancing. I think at that moment I needed to be away from the stress I was getting and enjoy life. At first, I was never the dancer type; I was uncomfortable, shy, quiet, it was like going to elementary school all over again better yet high school. But gradually as I took classes and kept learning, I got into it and loved it ever since. I am mainly a hip-hop dancer but it never hurts to try different styles. To me dance is about a story that was written with your feet, which was read by your heart and destined for the soul. The way we dance expresses the way we feel. Either it’s angry, joy, spontaneous, or wacky; there’s always going to be feeling into it.

Laura Braid
Artistic in nature. Profoundly passionate. A leader. My name is Laura Braid and I live to dance.
I am 19 years old and I am currently attending Algonquin College within the Advertising program. i have always been passionate about the arts and everything creative, so the opportunity to be involved within such a demanding, yet rewarding creative program is a blessing.I began dancing at the age of six years old, at my very first studio and took tap as my introductory to the dance world. I loved every minute of it and so began to expand into other genres and expose myself to all forms of dance. I have danced at a studio my entire life as well as taking part in the fine arts program at Canterbury High School. I have taken tap, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, ballet, pointe, modern, and just about everything in between; however, merging myself into the hip-hop scene is something very new me as of this year, and I have valued and loved every minute thus far.
Dance for me has always been a release. It has helped me through the most amazing points in life and the absolute worst. No matter what, I have always had dance to pull me through any moment and bring me to the greatest happiness a person can achieve. To me? Dance is more than an art form; it is a way of living. It’s a means of expression, a way of finding who you want to be, and connects your body, mind, and heart.I have an unbreakable devotion to family and friends, a “go-getter” attitude, and I will never stop dancing.

Reg Dimanlig, 20, University of Ottawa; Bachelor of Health SciencesBeen dancing for: 5 yearsKind of dances: Hiphop, Street, Urban What dance means to you?Dance could be defined in so many ways. Through the years of my so called “dancing career”, I’ve constantly asked myself what it meant. Up to this point, I can’t really express what it is that pushes me to continue doing what i do. Everyone says its their passion, its a form of art, its an expression, but to me, I dance simply because it feels good, and it feels right. Dancing brings a certain joy and enthusiasm in me, that no other experience have. It is both challenging and exciting. There’s a something in the process of learning the first 8 count of a song to getting  a whole piece and performing on stage. It fuels life, the rush you get as you hit every beat of a song, or groove to the slightest melody of music. All these, plus the fun and inspiration i get when I’m surrounded by amazing dancers pushes me to strive and continue learning.

Dasha Bodnya
My name is Dasha Bodnya. I am 17 years old.  I am currently enrolled at the University of Ottawa and am taking up International Development and Globalization.
I began dancing at the tender age of 6 in the city of Moscow, Russia. I picked ballet and trained at a nearby dance studio for three years. At 16, I ventured into street dance, moving on to taking Hip Hop and Jazz classes. It wasn’t until then that I started taking dance seriously. The same year, I moved to Ottawa and, shortly after, became a member of both Pulse N’ Limited dance crew and Future Shock dance troupe. I later started to choreograph being encouraged by support and example of other dancers. That was when I explored new dance styles such as waacking and voguing. Currently, I continue to train in the above styles. However, I strive to develop my own style by letting my personality come out through my choreography.
For me, dance is passion. It is the hidden language of my soul. When I dance, language barriers and other obstacles don’t exist. I’m able to let everything out and just be myself. My love for dance caused me to overcome the challenges of moving to Canada. And it continues to keep me pushing through and beyond my perceived limits. It helps me reaching my absolute potential and connects me to so many wonderful people that inspire me on a daily basis.
